Discussion
Septic embolism is caused by haematogenous spread of thrombi containing microorganisms to various sites in the body like lungs, brain, heart and skin. These thrombi got implanted in various organs leading to micro-abscesses and infarction. 1 Common sources of septic embolism include bone and soft tissue infections, endocarditis (particularly right sided in intravenous drug abusers), puerperal sepsis and dental infections. 2 FVS can also be present in other diseases like pulmonary metastasis, pulmonary vasculitis, pulmonary infarction and pulmonary arteriovenous malformations. 3 Other radiological signs of septic pulmonary embolism are cavitations, peripheral wedge-shaped pulmonary consolidations and solid nodules. 4 Treatment includes eradication of primary source of infection.
